Downtown Revitalization Plan
In 2005, the Erie Downtown Partnership, the City of Erie and Erie Redevelopment Authority partnered to conduct the first comprehensive study of Downtown Erie in over 25 years. PA DCED provided a $50K grant matching $50k of local funds to fund the study. Kise, Straw, & Kolodner, and Urban Partners were retained to assist with this study, focusing on Erie's 70-block Central Business District. (14th Street North to the waterfront, between Sassafras to Holland Streets).
The first steps were to clearly understand current market conditions. The market analysis provided four key recommendations.
- Develop Residential Condominiums Class A office space on bluffs overlooking Presque Isle.
- Concentrate new and existing niche' retailers in the vicinity of 5th and State Street.
- Develop community-serving retail along the 12th Street corridor.
- Develop home ownership opportunities (condos, lofts and town homes) along 13th and 14th Streets.
Early efforts to implement this study are underway. In October 2007, an intense design effort resulted in development of a Design Charrette plan outlining the first $55 million of development in the vicinity of Griswold Park and Plaza.
